Pisces is a constellation named after the Latin plural for fish. It occupies a vast area of celestial space, spanning over 889 square degrees. Despite being one of the largest constellations, its stars are quite dim, with none being brighter than fourth magnitude. As a result, it can be quite challenging to spot this constellation with the naked eye.
Interestingly, Pisces is significant for containing the point at which the sun crosses the celestial equator into the Northern Hemisphere. This event, known as the vernal equinox, typically occurs around March 20th each year. While the vernal equinox used to lie in Aries, it has since shifted into Pisces due to the Earth's wobble on its axis, also referred to as precession. According to renowned astronomer and author Ian Ridpath, this phenomenon is responsible for the shift in the location of the vernal equinox.
