The origin of the runes can be traced back to the time of Odin, the god of magic and wisdom. Odin was always in pursuit of ultimate knowledge, but he believed that it could not be attained through human senses. In order to gain access to the spring of wisdom, Odin sacrificed one of his eyes. He then reversed the conventional methods of knowledge by mortally injuring himself with a spear and hanging from a tree in a cold region for two days and two nights. Just before death approached, he was gifted with the knowledge of 18 magical runes. Odin spread the images of these runes across the land, and their number eventually increased to 24.

The Futhark alphabet was derived from the runes, but the runes themselves retained their magical properties. They were used for various purposes such as contacting the dead, offering protection, or seeking direction. The runes were also utilized for divination and as a way of accessing other realms of existence. Runes could be inscribed on various surfaces such as wood (especially oak, beech or pine), bone, shells, paper, or stone (especially quartz). Creating a stronger connection could be achieved by manually drawing or carving the runes, as opposed to using runes made by others.
